2020-01-24 · Green spaces, parks and planting can help to create healthy cities that are sustainable in the long term. SMHI has worked with the City of Stockholm to create a knowledge base on green infrastructure. Green areas are important from an ecological as well as cultural and public health perspective. As urbanization puts demands for a more dense urban fabric, data on green spaces and peoples access to it becomes increasingly important.
We distinguish ourselves as a publisher of design rather than a conventional producer. We work with designers in the same way publishing houses work with their authors. Our Green Capital grants support strategic green space projects to bring multiple environmental benefits such as river restoration in parks, new habitats for wildlife and improved space for play. Our Community Green Space grants support the creation and improvement of green spaces such as community gardens, school grounds and nature areas. The European City and Green Space looks at these and other issues through the prism of four metropoles - London, Stockholm, Helsinki and St Petersburg. All represent different types of North European city, yet each has experienced distinctive economic, political and cultural trajectories, whilst also facing powerful challenges and problems of similar kinds with regard to green space.
